Boru and I are doing pretty well. We haven't mastered the range of commands recommended in Dokken's Retriever Training, but that's more my fault than Boru's. He's mastered "come" and "sit" with ease, so I'm sure he'd have "down" and "place," and "crate" if I was more diligent with my training.
According to the the Dokken bible that I'm following, by now, Boru should have been introduced to feathers. This is something that I'm very eager to do after hearing a story from my grandfather about his brother's dog who would retrieve anything, as long as it didn't have feathers.
My problem is, I'm in short supply of a pigeon, duck, or pheasant wing. I was not planning on getting a puppy last hunting season, so I don't have anything hanging out in the freezer. So, I implore you, how do I get a wing for some feather introduction? We have a ton of doves flying around here, but I'm not so sure shooting one two months before the season starts is a great idea. Same thing goes with geese and mergansers...I'm more than happy to shoot a resident goose, but I would like to keep my hunting license, so shooting something out of season is out.
Anyone know how I can get my grubby hands on a bird wing?
